"Wind Me Up!" at 9:30 Club
"Wind Me Up!," a song that was first published on Chuck Brown’s 1993 album This is a Journey… Into Time, became a call-and-response mantra at Chuck Brown concerts to pump up the energy of the crowd. “Wind me up, Chuck! Wind me up, Chuck!”, the crowd would yell as the music slowly built into the distinctive go-go beat, igniting an energy only found in Washington, D.C. The call-and-response “wind me up” tradition exemplified the pride and positive energy Washingtonians had toward go-go music and its grandfather Chuck. At Chuck Brown’s funeral, crowds chanted “Wind Me Up, Chuck” and danced to the go-go beat as a way to pay tribute to the man that took go-go outside of D.C.’s borders.
